The engine on the Yamaha FX1 was similar to one in the Yamaha Super Jet models, a popular line of stand-up PWCs that are still being manufactured today. The motor is a two cylinder, two-stroke type with a displacement of 701 cubic centimeters. The reed-valve design restricted the flow of fuel to one direction, allowing for maximum performance during acceleration. The FX1 engine was water-cooled, which is a consistent cooling system for watercraft. Its wet-exhaust system's main advantage over a dry-exhaust type was its ability to cool the exhausted gases to maintain a flexible hose. A Mikuni BN-series carburetor was included for fuel and air mixture. Power output was rated at 63 horsepower. Bore and stroke measured 3.14 inches by 2.67 inches. An NGK spark plug was matched with an analog ignition and electric starter, and a direct-drive transmission was fitted for gear shifting.

The FX1 had a length of 88.2 inches, a width of 26.8 inches and a height of 26 inches. The weight of this personal watercraft, with fluids and fuel, topped out at 290 pounds. This machine was painted white, with purple and red graphics. Handlebar and standing cushions were purple, while a large "FX1" graphic was added to both sides of the watercraft.

Stand-up personal watercraft models were primarily designed and advertised for consumers interested in competitive events. The Yamaha SuperJet became a staple model in the racing world, while the FX1 became more well-known in the freestyle world. This was the only personal watercraft designed and marketed as a freestyle machine. Because of this, enthusiasts still use the mid-1990s model Yamaha FX1 today.
