How to Put on a Knee Sleeve

Weak-kneed isn't just an expression used to describe someone who yields to temptation; some people actually do have weak or easily injured knees. Repetitive knee strain from sports or on the job injuries lead many people to look for a solution to chronic knee pain. In many cases the knee needs more support. An over-the-counter solution is available. A knee sleeve, when fitted properly, supports the knee so that people with pain can resume much of their normal activity.

Instructions

Find the type of knee brace recommended for your knee pain. Many types of knee braces exist, and each is meant to remedy a different ailment. A patellofemoral brace, or elastic knee sleeve, is the over-the-counter solution for people who suffer from knee pain. Other knee braces, such as the prophylactic and functional knee brace, are used after surgery to prevent re-injury; they should be fitted by your physician.

Make sure the knee brace fits your frame. Over-the-counter knee sleeves are made of neoprene, a material that can be very uncomfortable if it isn't fitted to you properly. Try on as many braces as you can to find the size that closely matches your body build.

Open the straps on the buttress, if they exist. Pull the neoprene knee sleeve up to the injured knee and align the hole in the brace with the knob of your knee. You should have to firmly pull the brace, but it shouldn't cut off circulation in your leg.

Adjust the buttress so that it fits comfortably around your knee. A patellofemoral brace may have adjustable straps to tighten a buttress, the padded area surrounding the knee, or a built-in support. If the supports are built-in, pull them so that they are aligned with the shape of your knee. Close the hook and loop straps when they are comfortable

Test the knee brace. Bend or move the way you intend to during your activities. If the brace is “pinching” you, it is too tight or improperly aligned. Correct the brace until you can move comfortably.
