How to Color Skateboard Wheels

Your new skateboard came equipped with white wheels, but you really wish they were purple. Not a problem. In a few simple steps you can personalize your skateboard with wheels of any color you desire. Better yet, it's a relatively cost-efficient project that will help your skateboard reflect your own taste and personality.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the bearings from the wheels. Wash the bushings/wheels in the sink with soap and warm water. Use an old toothbrush to scrub the wheels.

    • 2

Fill the large pot with enough water to submerge the bushings/wheels.

    • 3

Heat the water until it begins to boil, at which point add the dye. Generally a 1 oz. packet of dye should be mixed with 3 gallons of water. Add more dye if you want a darker color.

    • 4

Stir the mixture until the powdered dye has dissolved. Reduce the water from a boil to a simmer. When the mixture is at a simmer, place the bushings/wheels in the pot.

    • 5

Allow the bushings/wheels to sit in the dye for 2 minutes and then check on them. Repeat this step every 2 minutes until you have achieved the desired shade of the color. It will take longer to achieve a darker shade.

    • 6

Take the bushings/wheels out of the dye when the desired color has been achieved. Rinse them in water and allow them to dry. Once they are dry, put them back on your skateboard.
