How to Take Care of a Longboard

With their surfboard design, longboards are made for cruising and speed. They are suitable for downhill racing and sharp turns. While they differ from skateboards in appearance and practicality, caring for longboards is much the same as caring for their shorter brothers. The deck, bearings and trucks need close attention and proper care to ensure the longboard has a long lifespan.

Take care of your bearings, as they are crucial to how fast your longboard can go. Avoid riding through water, as it will greatly damage your bearings. Grease your bearings if you have no choice but to go through water. This provides the bearings with adequate protection. Clean and re-lubricate your bearings if they make any noise, don't spin freely or get caught in water without protection. Soak them in solvents to dissolve any contaminated sections. Also lubricate them after every 50 hours of riding.

Purchase a new deck if you see any cracks in your current one. This indicates a damaged deck that could break apart as you ride, creating a dangerous situation. Take care of the grip tape, since it helps protect the deck. Get rid of grime on the tape with a soft, nylon brush, soap and water. Wipe off mud and dirt after a ride using a damp rag. Lastly, keep your deck dry, as wet decks can fracture and break.

Always make sure your trucks are intact after each ride. Vibrations, grinds and bumps can loosen the nuts and bolts keeping trucks together. Tighten the bolts anytime you notice any loose parts.
