How to Measure the Wheel Base on a Skateboard

The length of a skateboard's wheelbase affects the turning radius and responsiveness of the skateboard. Longboards with a long wheelbase are very stable, but not ideal for quick turns and trick moves. Shortboards have a short wheelbase, so they are very maneuverable, but at the expense of stability. Shortboards are more suitable for experienced riders. Knowing the wheelbase of your skateboard allows to purchase similar boards, or size up or down, depending on your preference.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the board over and lay it on level ground.

    • 2

Locate the mounting holes, which hold the wheel assemblies on the board. There are usually four holes: two in the front and two in the back.

    • 3

Measure the distance from the bottom-right mounting hole of the top assembly to the top-right hole of the bottom assembly. This distance is the wheelbase.
