How to Build an Outdoor Ramp

Modifying an outdoor building with a ramp makes it more easily accessible. You may want to adapt a shed for a wheelbarrow or add a ramp to your front door so that elderly people or wheelchair users can access the property. Before building an outdoor ramp, it is important to consider building regulations and plan the design. This will ensure that is wide enough for the load and can withstand pressure from the weight that is carried across it.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a location for constructing the ramp and take measurements. You will need to plan exactly how much space you need to add the structure. If the ramp is for wheelchair users or a cart, allow a turning area and landing space at the top of the ramp so that the object can be maneuvered.

    • 2

Decide on whether to buy a self-assembling ramp -- which is like scaffolding -- or to get help from a builder. Using a ramp kit will give you flexibility to remove the ramp. However, a permanent ramp is more durable.

    • 3

Design the ramp. Draw a map of the area and indicate where the ramp will be positioned. T-shaped or U-shaped ramps are common, as they enable the object to turn corners while gaining height. Label the diagram with the measurements you took in step 1.

    • 4

Check the building regulations in your area with your local building authority or review the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ramp needs to conform to building restrictions so it is safe. The ADA outlines regulations for wheelchair ramps to ensure they are not too steep or narrow for wheelchair users.

    • 5

Seek approval from a building professional. Show him your ramp plan and ask him to check that it is viable. If you are an amateur, employ a builder to assist in constructing the ramp and sourcing materials. Having an expert to oversee the project ensures that you will not make mistakes.

    • 6

Prepare the allocated space so that you can start building the ramp. Remove any plants, rip out old staircases and create a work yard to store your construction materials.

    • 7

Source the construction materials for the ramp. Ramps don't have to be made just from concrete -- timber or metal frames will also give you strength, reliability and durability. However, use gravel and concrete to support the ramp where it comes into contact with the ground.

Build the ramp according to your plan and builder-approved design. Test it before allowing anybody else to use it to make sure that it is correctly installed.
