How to Take Bearings Out of Skateboard Wheels
Each skateboard wheel contains two sets of bearings, each with the sole purpose of reducing friction between the wheel and the axle of the skateboard. The bearings themselves are housed inside a sealed cartridge, which not only holds the bearings, but also keeps them lubricated and protected. Bearings need to be removed and cleaned (or even replaced) if they no longer turn freely or if they feel gritty when spinning. This sensation is typically caused by a build-up of dirt and grime around the bearings.
Things You'll Need
- Socket wrench
- 1/2 in. socket
- Paper clip (as needed)

1
Lay the skateboard face down on its deck, so you have access to the underside. Use a socket wrench with ½ in. socket, and turn the nut on the outside of the wheel clockwise to loosen. Set the nut carefully aside.
-
2
Slide the wheel to the end of the axle so the tip of the axle just reaches the far edge of the bearing cartridge. This cartridge will be located in the interior of the wheel.
-
3
Use the end of the axle to pry the bearing cartridge free of the wheel. Do this for each bearing cartridge (each wheel has two).
-
4
Access individual bearings by using a paper clip to pry away the rubber seal from the side of the bearing cartridge. The bearings will be inside.
