Aerobics Class Etiquette
-
Punctuality
-
If you've taken more than a few aerobics classes, you've likely been interrupted by one class member arriving late and wandering around the room to find an open spot. Punctuality is important in all parts of your life, including when you visit the gym. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early for your class to give yourself a chance to change, find a spot in the room and get warmed up. If you have to leave early, inform the teacher before the class, take a spot next to the door and leave quickly and quietly.
Space
-
You won't likely appreciate someone who joins the class and stands just a few inches away from you, especially if the room has several open areas. When taking an aerobics class, be mindful of how close you are to others. Being too close to another class member can not only distract her and limit her movements, but you also risk bumping into each other once you both begin moving.
General Manners
-
When people take an aerobics class, they do so for the benefits of an up-tempo workout, not to hear you talking loudly. If you take the class with a friend, speak quietly when necessary but refrain from talking once the class begins. Keep your cellphone in your gym locker; don't take it into the class with you, as its ringing is disruptive. If you're unclear about a particular exercise, take a moment to observe the teacher's movements and note what the other class members are doing, rather than blurt out a question.
Personal Grooming
-
No one wants to work out next to someone who doesn't practice basic grooming habits, so ensure you're properly dressed and prepared for the aerobics class. Wear appropriate athletic clothing, such as a T-shirt and shorts, and wash the items after each use. Wear deodorant and avoid excess amounts of perfume, which can disrupt those with scent sensitivities. If you sweat profusely during the class, use a towel to dry yourself off when necessary and wipe down and disinfect any accessories you use during the class.
