Review of Nia No Impact Aerobics

Nia is not new in the world of aerobics. In fact, this gentle and free-spirited class has been around since the 1980s. The Nia technique uses a combination of dance, martial arts and free-form movement designed to help you connect with your body, spirit and emotions.
  1. No Impact Aerobics

    • Debbie Rosas and Carlos AyaRosas created Nia in 1982. The early seeds of Nia were planted after Rosas and AyaRosas took a martial arts class together, and the next day couldn’t stand to put shoes on during their aerobics class. Nia is performed barefoot, and combines martial arts, dance and the healing arts. It is a physical exercise designed to move and heal the body, but is not focused on physical results. Thus, Nia originally stood for No Impact Aerobics.

    Taking a Class

    • According to the official Nia website, students will experience choreography based on martial arts, dance, yoga and other diciplines. There are 52 different movements in Nia. Instructors guide dancers by demonstrating the choreography, and use some verbal commands. Students are not limited to following the instructors’ choreography, as free movement is encouraged.

    Benefits

    • The movements of Nia address specific muscle action in order to increase strength and flexibility and to improve mobility, agility and stability. In addition to the physical benefits, Nia helps to fight stress. Many students who participate claim to feel more joyful, at peace and more present within their bodies and minds.

    Who takes Nia

    • At a Nia class you'll find men and women, young and old. Those who are healing from physical pain or injury, or from emotional or spiritual trauma may also participate. Those who are new to aerobic exercise, and those who are veterans also enjoy Nia.
