DIY Dance Pole

Pole dancing is a form of exercise that strengthens the body through resistance training. The body's core in particular benefits from the exercise routines an athlete can perform when training with a pole. Dance trainers position themselves in poses that stress the muscles against the weight of their own body. Constructing a workout pole is not difficult, and a pole fits into a variety of out-of-the-way places, including a bedroom, a garage and even a living room.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the eight-foot piece of plywood in half width wise. Center the flange in the middle of one of the pieces with the tape measure. Drill through all four holes in the flange -- and through board -- with a bit the same diameter as the flange holes.

    • 2

Cut the 2-by-6-inch board into two 4-inch pieces, one one-foot piece, and two 1 1/2-inch pieces. Center the flange on the one-foot piece, and drill through the four holes, through the board. With washers attached, slide the bolts through one of the pieces of plywood. Place the board on the ground, so that the heads of the bolts are down, legs up. Slide the holes of the one-foot board over the legs of the bolts. Slide the flange over the legs of the bolts, and fasten the two boards and the flange together with washers and nuts.

Nail the two four-foot 2-by-6-inch boards to two opposing sides of the plywood attached to the 2-by-6 and flange. Put them on edge before nailing them. On edge, nail the one-foot 1 1/2-inch 2-by-6-inch boards to the same piece of plywood. First butt them up the ends of the flanged 2-by-6, then nail them.

Mark the center of the second piece of plywood. Cut a 1 3/4-inch hole around the center of the board with a router. Place the second piece of plywood on top of the 2-by-6-inch boards nailed to the first piece of plywood. Slide the pole through the hole, and screw it into the flange. Nail the second piece of plywood into the 2-by-6-inch boards. Slide the bricks between the two pieces of plywood, but leave them near the edge for leverage.
