How to Make Your Own Skipping Rope

Jumping rope is an effective cardiovascular exercise that also tones muscles in the legs, abdomen and upper body. Skipping rope is a convenient and accessible workout since it takes very little space to perform indoors and is not weather dependent. Making jump ropes cuts down on the cost of equipment -- a homemade skipping rope costs a fraction of the price of manufactured jump ropes. In fact, a pair of tennis shoes and a homemade jump rope is all that someone needs for an effective exercise program.

Instructions

Hold one end of the clothesline under one arm. Step on the line with one foot and pull it up to your other underarm. Cut the rope with a utility knife where that end meets your underarm to achieve the proper length, adding about 6 inches to account for the knots which will secure it to the jump rope handles.

    • 2

Push the ends of the rope through the forward ends of jump rope handles. The forward ends are tapered where your thumb and index finger grip the handles. Push the rope ends all the way through the back ends of the handles.

    • 3

Tie knots in the ropes at the back ends of the handles. Push the knots into the hollow handle ends of the homemade jump rope.
