Warm-Up
-
Make sure to warm-up before performing any complex kickboxing techniques. Forgoing stretching could cost you a serious muscle tear that could take weeks to heal properly. Warm-up routines will help loosen up your muscles, increase flexibility and most importantly, decrease your chance of injury. If you are taking a kickboxing class your warm-up routine will vary depending upon your instructor. But in general, a typical routine will last between 10 to 15 minutes. It should include a full body stretch, starting with the top of your body and then working your way down. Make sure your body feels comfortable and properly stretched out before starting any kickboxing techniques.
Kicking Techniques
-
There are an endless number of kicking techniques in kickboxing. Generally you will learn the same basic techniques wherever you go to practice kickboxing. However, more advanced styles of kicking may vary depending upon your instructor.
One of the first kicks you will probably learn is the side kick. When practicing this move the right side of your body should face an imaginary target. After you have mastered the correct stance, continue to raise you knee up and kick in the direction of the target. When you raise your leg make sure the non-kicking foot is stable enough to support the rest of your body. The actual kick should be approximately as high as your hip is from the floor. If this kick is executed properly it can be very effective against another opponent.
The front kick is another basic move. With this kick your body should directly face the target, with your feet a shoulders' width apart. Lift your leg up toward your chest then kick with the ball of your foot in the direction of the target.
Punching Techniques
-
When you are working on punching moves start by practicing the basic boxing stance. As with the front kick, your feet should be about a shoulders' width apart. Then turn slightly, aim your arm in front of your body and throw a punch toward the punching bag.
While you are working on this punching move, make sure you also practice defense techniques. Punching an opponent can be very effective, but it can also leave you vulnerable for a counterpunch. To avoid this from happening, place your chin behind your shoulder and keep your opposite hand in a protective position near your face.
