Classic Pilates Reformer
-
The original design is the classic style of the Pilates Reformer, also called the Universal Reformer. The bed of the machine is elevated in order to allow for standing moves. This type of Reformer takes up more space than other designs, but allows you to do all of the original Reformer moves designed by Joseph Pilates. The classic Reformer style includes an advanced spring-loaded weight system which allows you to increase or decrease the weight on the machine for specific levels of resistance. The classic style is generally more expensive than other Reformer types.
Portable Styles
-
If you have limited space, you can get a stackable Reformer. These are conveniently constructed for easy storage. You can buy one for your home and turn your living room into a Pilates studio and store it when you are done with your workout. Stackable Reformers are ideal for group Reformer classes in a studio, as you can store them in the corner when not in use, and use the studio floor for other exercise or dance classes. Some Reformers cannot stack but are closer to the ground and take up less space than the classic version. Portable and stackable Reformers often cost less than the classic version.
Complementary Equipment
-
You can add equipment to the Reformer to intensify and add variety to the exercises. All Reformers allow you to execute a vast number of classic and contemporary Pilates and fitness moves, with the option to use extra equipment such as the Long Box, Jump Board, and Arc Barrel. Small equipment such as and weights and foam rollers can help you develop strength and keep you from getting bored with your workouts. You can also save space and money with a Cadillac/Reformer combination unit. The Cadillac is another full-body workout machine created by Joseph Pilates. Instead of buying two machines, use a combination unit in your home or studio to reap the benefits of both machines.
