How to Correctly Lace Your Running Shoes

Lacing your running shoes correctly ensures you will always run safely and comfortably. While there are a wide range of methods available to serious runners that experience certain chronic problems with their shoes, most runners opt for the traditional criss-cross lacing pattern. This is sufficient to keep your shoes secure around your foot and provide support to your ankle.

Instructions

    • 1

Take one shoe and one lace and put them in your lap. Lay the lace out across your lap to check for tangles or knots.

    • 2

Insert one end of the lace into the bottom right eyelet on your shoe, coming in from the top. Insert the other end into the bottom left eyelet, also from the top.

    • 3

Pull the lace through until you have a tight horizontal band across the bottom two eyelets. Double-check to ensure the lace has been evenly threaded and is the same length on both sides.

    • 4

Take the end of the lace from the bottom right eyelet and run it diagonally to the next eyelet up from the bottom on the left. You can insert it from the top or bottom, depending on your preferences.

    • 5

Take the other end of the lace from the bottom left eyelet and run it diagonally to the next eyelet up from the bottom on the right. You should cross over the top of the other end of the lace in the process.

    • 6

Repeat this process until you run out of eyelets. You can then tie your laces between the top two eyelets once you put your shoes on.
