1
Understand what good posture is. Good posture is when your spine is straight and your shoulders are rolled back. You should be standing evenly on both feet with your weight distributed evenly and your chin level with the ground. Your body should be relaxed. Bad posture can be caused by bad furniture, staying sedentary for a long period of time, or a possible medical condition.

2
Avoid slouching. If you slouch too often you can train your spine to become rounded and develop a curve. When sitting, align your back against the chair and place both feet flat on the floor. Avoid slumping or leaning.

3
Try yoga or similar stretching exercises. Stretching regularly helps flexibility and keeps muscles from tightening. Yoga incorporates stretching and exercises to improve your core strength and posture.

4
Sleep on a firm mattress. Soft mattresses are not good for posture. A mattress should support your spine when you sleep. Also, your pillows should not be stacked too high. Your neck should not be at an awkward angle, instead the neck and your spine should be lined up straight. If you prefer to sleep on your side, place a small pillow between your knees to keep the spine aligned.

5
Practice standing straight and walking. Place a book on the top of your head and practice balancing the book with straight posture as you stand and walk. Align your body by making sure your weight is evenly distributed on both feet and your chin is level with the ground. Arms should be relaxed at your sides. Shoulders should be rolled back.
