How to Go Sledding

1
Research different types of sleds and choose the best one for you. From wooden sleds with steel runners, tubes, plastic saucer sleds and toboggans, you're sure to find a sled that's perfect. Parents should consider a sled with steering and braking capability for added safety.
-
2
Dress appropriately. A warm, waterproof coat, gloves, hat, snow pants and boots with layers underneath should keep you toasty and dry. Carry a tube of lip balm and use it frequently to prevent chapped lips.
-
3
Use safety precautions. Children under 12 should wear a helmet when sledding. Plan your route down the hill, and look ahead for obstacles. Check for trees, roots coming out of the ground, and see where the hill ends so that you don't go flying out onto a street at the end of your run.
-
4
Watch for other sledders as you walk back up the hill with your sled. Walk up one of the sides of the hill instead of walking up the middle where other sledders will be zooming past you.
-
5
Go inside and warm up for a bit should you start to feel uncomfortably cold in any area of your body, particularly in your hands or feet.
