Cause of Sore Tendons

Tendons are bands of tough tissue that connect muscles to bones; the tendons of the body can become sore due to several different conditions, often stemming from stressful use of the muscle attached to the tendon.
  1. Repetitive Stress

    • Muscles and tendons can experience soreness a day or two after being subjected to repetitive stress; the chances of soreness increases as activity level increases.

    Strains

    • Muscles and tendons can become strained or "pulled" if they are stretched beyond their normal range of flexibility; a strained tendon is likely to experience soreness and possibly pain if its muscle is engaged.

    Chronic Soreness

    • Tendon soreness may fade on its own without further sign of harm, but it can also potentially become a chronic problem due to conditions like tendonitis and tendinosis, where tendons become inflamed or accumulate damage over time.

    Prevention

    • Tendon soreness can be prevented in many cases by avoiding overly strenuous physical activity and stretching muscles and tendons regularly.

    Considerations

    • After incurring a tendon injury it is important to rest the tendon long enough to make a full recovery before returning to previous levels of activity or you risk weakening the tendon.
