How to Walk Long Distances Without Being Bored

Walking is one of the easier ways to keep yourself in shape, and the best part is that you can do it almost anywhere at any time. Still, if you will be walking for several miles at a time, boredom can set in, which will make walking seem tedious rather than relaxing. Fortunately, there are ways to overcome the boredom and make your walk a pleasurable experience.

Instructions

  1. Keep Yourself Entertained

    • 1

Load a large selection of music onto a personal music player such as an iPod. Set up a series of play lists. These can be categorized by a variety of things, such as artist, genre, tempo, or era. Play the music according to your mood for as long as the walk lasts. Don't be afraid to sing along when the urge strikes.

    • 2

Contemplate an idea you have for a story, consider some of the things you need to get done, or make a mental list of places you need to go or would like to visit. Make sure there's no simple answer. You want to keep you mind busy for the entire trip.

    • 3

Let your mind drift and zone out while you walk. This will happen naturally as you focus on things suggested in the previous step.

    • 4

Put an audio book onto your music player as well as music. You can find plenty of books online or places like iTunes, which will usually last more than one trip.

    • 5

Bring a friend with you, or talk to one on the phone. Talking with a friend while walking will turn the event into a bonding experience, and using a headset with a phone will keep your arm from getting tired from holding up the phone.
