How to Walk a Chiuahua

Chihuahuas are adorable little dogs that are often breed as show dogs, but also make great pets. They’re best known for their small size, with many of the dogs staying below ten pounds and some dogs weighing less than six pounds. Their small size also makes them more vulnerable to outside forces and even taking one of these little dogs on a walk can be difficult. If you have a Chihuahua or plan to buy one and want to know how to walk it, pay attention to its age and the weather outside.

Instructions

    • 1

Watch for signs of weak knees in older dogs. The Chihuahua breeds often have problems walking as they get older, and if your dog has problems, don’t force it on a walk.

    • 2

Use a body harness with a long leash. Since the dog is smaller, it’s also closer to the ground. Using a longer leash will give your dog more freedom to run around and play during the walk.

    • 3

Put a small sweater or tee-shirt specially made for dogs on your Chihuahua if you plan on walking it in cold weather. The dogs are more susceptible to cold weather and need some protection since they don’t have fur.

    • 4

Determine beforehand if your dog likes being around children or other dogs. Some are antisocial, in which case you’ll need to avoid parks, playgrounds, and other areas where you might find kids and dogs.

    • 5

Let your dog walk freely without a leash or harness when you’re able. The dogs are quite loyal and most will stay with their owners, even when they aren’t physically attached.
