How FitFlops Work

FitFlops are one in a group of footwear that claim to give a workout while the wearer walks. FitFlops are a casual, flip-flop style shoe that contain what the manufacturer describes as a multi-density midsole and built-in micro-wobbleboard that work the muscles. They are meant to tone legs and gluteus muscles.
  1. Benefits

    • The FitFlop puts a rise of high density material containing the microwobbleboard under the arch of the foot. It also has an extra-firm toe area. This requires the foot and leg to exert more effort when walking, since the wobbleboard requires extra effort at stability and the toe area requires more work from the toes in pushing off during a stride.

    Expert Insight

    • According to Laguna Beach fitness expert and trainer Jay Blahnik, FitFlops provide benefits -- in the way of stronger feet. They do not trim thighs or gluts. Gina Lombardi of "Fit Nation" agrees, saying that the FitFlop mimics a mini stability ball under the foot, but provides little beneficial return.

    Warning

    • FitFlops can actually cause problems for those with flat feet, according to Cary Golub, podiatrist. They push the arch up, causing pain for those people. Flip flops in general are a poor choice in footwear, however, according to an Auburn University biomechanics study. Regular flip flops alter the way a wearer walks, causing pain and possible long term problems. The FitFlop may be a better choice than regular flip flops for long term walking, but a regular shoe or sandal with a strap and good arch support may be even better.
