A step counter is a device that employs a motion sensor to count how many steps you take. A step counter differs from a pedometer, since a pedometer also calculates distance and may have other functions. Step counters only measure the number of steps taken.

If you want to track how much distance you cover, consider purchasing a pedometer. Some pedometers also calculate calories burned and include calendars or alarms.
Accuracy

Clip your step counter to your belt or waistband and make sure it's secure. Bouncing may cause the device to record movements incorrectly. Check your counter's accuracy by walking 100 steps and then checking the counter. Ninety percent accuracy, or a reading between 90 and 110 steps, is considered sufficient for general fitness use.
