Kung fu is a general term to describe forms of martial arts that originated from China. It's one of the oldest martial arts styles in the world. Some schools in Michigan may teach several styles of martial arts, while others focus on a single form. Most schools offer classes for pupils of all ages and abilities.

  1. Chan's Kung Fu School

    • Chan's Kung Fu School serves residents in the Grand Rapids area in western Michigan. The school was founded in 1975 and offers instruction in wing chun kung fu, youth kung fu and jow ga kung fu. The founder of Chan's Kung Fu School, Sam Chan, teaches the wing chun and jow ga kung fu classes. Win chung is a practical form of martial arts that teaches self defense through low kicks, fast strikes, grappling and trapping. Jow ga is a traditional form of martial arts that emphasizes strength and conditioning. Moves include hand techniques, quick footwork and powerful kicks. The youth kung fu classes are for children ages 8 to 12. Techniques help students gain strength, self control, focus and motivation. Chan's Kung Fu School also teaches other forms of martial arts, and offers a kung fu class for youngsters ages 6 to 8. Those who cannot attend group classes can sign up for private instruction and training.

    • The School of Eastern Martial Arts is located in Walled Lake in eastern Michigan. This school's main style external martial art is kung fu. Methods include short-range fighting and hand techniques as well as long-range fighting and kicking. Adult kung fu classes teach stances, hand forms and empty hand forms, qin na, kicks and training forms. Youth kung fu instructors teach children kung fu basics as well as principles like self-control, focus and motivation.

    Kung Fu Michigan

    • Kung Fu Michigan in Ann Arbor teaches students from beginner to advanced and beyond. Owner Ryan Wilson teaches all classes. Beginner students learn the praying mantis style of kung fu, while intermediate students learn eagle style and advanced students learn crane and snake style. Black sash students learn tiger, ape, monkey and dragon styles. All styles are part of kang-nei-chin gung fu. Kung Fu Michigan offers instruction for beginner kids, advanced kids, teens and adults of all levels.
