Kung fu, which comes from the Chinese word for “hard work” or “perfection,” is a type of martial art. The state of Florida is home to several schools that teach kung fu techniques. These schools are generally open to all ages and skill levels. Self-defense techniques as well as weaponry training and breathing exercises are some of the skills taught in kung fu schools in Florida.

    • Wah Lum Kung Fu offers kung fu training programs for both children and adults. The children’s class focuses on teaching young individuals physical and mental techniques. According to the school’s website, the training program will help children become more flexible, coordinated and disciplined. The adult kung fu class teaches individuals breathing techniques, self-defense moves, and weapon training. Weekday and weekend classes are available. Both the adult and children programs run about an hour in length.

    Taiji Kung Fu Academy

    • Taiji Kung Fu Academy has two locations in Florida. Both schools offer kung fu training programs for all ages. According to the school’s website, students will learn how to improve stability, strength, speed and adaptability. The kung fu school also teaches several types of Chinese weapon techniques, such as staff, broadsword, spear and straight sword. In addition, the Taiji Fu Academy has a pro-shop on-site where students can purchase the necessary martial arts clothing, weapons, and other equipment.

    Chung’s Kung Fu & Tai Chi

    • Chung’s Kung Fu and Tai Chi school offers adult and children kung fu classes. According to the school’s website, the classes focus on improving health and self-defense. Classes are available during the week and weekend. New students have the opportunity to take a free trial class. Chung’s Kung Fu and Tai Chi school also offers a weekend intensive training program once a month. It is an accelerated course aimed toward “out-of-towners” who are interested in learning the basic techniques of kung fu.

    Tallahassee Shaolin Kung Fu

    • Tallahassee Shaolin Kung Fu School teaches three different styles of kung fu: Northern Shaolin, Southern Shaolin, and Wing Chun. Classes are available at night during the weekdays and during the day on Saturdays. According to the school’s website, classes are not divided by age or level, and all individuals train together.

    Kung Fu Connection
