3 Methods of Self-Defense
-
Martial Arts
-
One popular method of self-defense is martial arts. A wide variety of martial arts can teach practitioners how to defend themselves, such as Karate, Krav Maga and kick boxing. These martial arts typically teach you how to defend yourself from attacks by using your hands, legs and other body parts to both fend off an attacker and possibly injure an attacker, so you have an opportunity to escape.
Non-lethal Measures
-
Many non-lethal, defensive weapons can be used to aid in self-defense. Pepper spray, for instance, is a popular defensive weapon that discourages an attacker and incapacitates him long enough for you to get away. Pepper spray can be useful for a human attacker, but also for wildlife, such as bears. Similarly, a whistle helps to call attention to an attack, which is something attackers typically want to avoid.
Weapons
-
Weapons can also be used in self-defense. A knife, for instance, discourages an attacker, especially if the attacker is unarmed. Similarly, a gun quickly convinces a would-be attacker you are not an easy target. When using a weapon you should, however, be trained in its use, as you may accidentally injure yourself or have the weapon taken away from you and used against you, by your attacker.
Redundancy
-
Although there are many different methods for self-defense, it is best to have a bit of redundancy, or more than one measure of defense, when considering different self-defense methods. You may prefer to keep pepper spray handy, but if you are separated from the bag or clothing you carry your pepper spray in, you need another form of defense. Similarly, if you are injured and unable to defend yourself with martial arts, pepper spray is an ideal thing to have on you.
