How to Defend Against a Spinning Hook Kick

A spinning hook kick is a common move used in martial arts. It involves pivoting on your front foot and spinning your body around while lifting your back foot in the air in a kicking motion. The intention is to kick your opponent with the back or the sole of your foot in the side of the head. This can be a very effective technique, but if you know how to properly defend against it, you'll have your opponent wishing she never tried it.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand with your dominant foot forward and your non-dominant foot back.

    • 2

Raise your arms so that they are on each side of your head. Keep your elbows out and aim them at your opponent's front thigh.

    • 3

Lower your head to the inside of your arms as your opponent prepares to kick.

    • 4

Shuffle forward as you are about to receive the kick and lean into the kick a couple of inches with your arms. The opponent's foot and ankle will hit your two arms, and your forward momentum will propel his foot away.
