How to Learn the Crucifix Position in UFC 1
Instructions
-
Performing the Crucifix
-
1
Lay on your opponent so you are chest-to-chest or chest-to-back with your body perpendicular to his.
-
2
Trap the opponent's arm that is closest to your legs between your knees and cross your ankles for a tighter grip. Keep your knees as close together as possible to make it harder for the opponent to escape.
-
3
Wrap the opponent's other arm under one of your armpits. You'll usually do this with your arm that is closest to the opponent's butt so your other arm can strike to the head but if you wish to focus on the body, trap the arm under the armpit closest to his head so you can aim for the ribs without obstruction.
-
4
Throw strikes with your free hand, elbow and forearm to the opponent's unprotected head or body.
Training the Crucifix
-
5
Visit a grappling gym or a jiu-jitsu school and sign up for classes. The crucifix is a difficult grappling position to execute properly so you'll need some regular training to be able to gain the position on someone consistently.
-
6
Watch UFC fights such as Gary Goodridge vs. Paul Herrera and the second fight between Matt Hughes and BJ Penn. Ivan Salaverry is another UFC fighter known for getting a crucifix from mount position. This helps you see how the crucifix can be applied during an actual fight.
-
7
Review video tutorials online showing the specific technique to getting a crucifix position. This helps you review what you learned in class and can help you mimic what you've seen in the UFC.
-
8
Grapple with a sparring partner and practice transitioning into a crucifix position. The more you practice, the better you will become at it.
