How to Change the Safety on an HK

HK handguns are used by law enforcement, the military and private citizens for protection and target shooting. The safety on the weapon is used to prevent the handgun from firing when not pointed at a target. If you want to change the position of the safety, you can easily use your fingers to do so while in the shooting stance.

      Point the weapon downrange so it's not aimed at anyone.

      Locate the safety switch on the side of the weapon. The safety switch has three positions on it. The first position is a safety that locks the trigger. The second position is the firing position. The third position is the de-cock position. This only engages the firing pin half-way so the gun will not go off.

      Run your index finger down the gun handle to the safety switch and change it to the proper position. The traditional safety is when the switch is pointed toward your body. The firing position is when the switch is pointed toward the ground. The de-cock position is where the switch is pointed down barrel toward your target.
