How to Change the Hop Up in an Airsoft

Airsoft guns with the “hop” system shoot farther than normally possible with lightweight ammunition. The “hop-up” is a device that increases the backspin on the BB pellet, which increases the distance of that BB’s travel. Adjusting the “hop-up” in an airsoft is a simple procedure that takes about 15 minutes. It makes aiming of the airsoft much easier, and makes you enjoy playing games that use airsoft guns, such as paintball.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the manufacturer’s manual carefully so that you are familiar with the airsoft gun’s parts and their functions.

    • 2

Determine the firing distance (range) to which you are most likely to use your airsoft rifle, and shoot a few test shots at that range. Make sure the BB color does not match the background to help you see the BB’s flight path.

    • 3

Pull back the airsoft’s charging handle to give yourself access to the rubber piece that you need to adjust to change the hop-up of the airsoft. Changing the setting will change the size of the release hole of the gun, which increases or decreases the backspin of the BB.

    • 4

Look inside the bolt and find the hop wheel. If you want to lengthen the flight’s distance, turn the wheel in the direction indicated in the airsoft manual. If you want to lower the power behind the shot to increase horizontal accuracy, turn the wheel in the opposite direction.

Shoot test shots until you find settings that work for you.
