Ninjutsu Balance Techniques

Balance Beam
-
If you have ever walked across a balance beam, you know it's not as easy as it looks. Gymnasts make tumbling and jumping on balance beams look graceful. Using a balance beam is a common ninjutsu balance technique, as it forces you to use such a small space on which to balance. Ninjas use them to practice techniques on and even spar on to increase balance.
Pipe Balance
-
You may have seen fairs where people try to balance on a log that rolls in the water. This is a little like that, except the log is a long pipe that is on the ground. It still rolls like the log, but if you fall you fall on the ground, not water. A beginner ninja will find it difficult to walk across the pipe without falling, but with practice the ninja can strike, dodge, jump and spar on the pipe.
Box Jumping
-
Box jumping is a ninjutsu balance technique. A simple milk crate is sometimes used. To practice, the ninja will jump from the floor onto the box, and then jump back onto the floor. The idea is to do so without making any noise, falling, knocking the box over or even moving the box at all. Just like with all of the other techniques, it takes practice.
Balancing on One Leg
-
Time how long you can balance on one leg. Begin by holding the other leg up just a few inches off the floor. Then try with your foot by your knee. Once this becomes easy for you, move onto more difficult ways to balance on one leg. Try bending your knee on the leg with which you are balancing.
Handstand
-
Successfully pulling off a handstand requires balance and practice. The longer you can hold a handstand, the more balance you have. Ninjas practice this balance technique with their legs straight up or knees bent like a yoga position. At first they will practice with their heels against a wall to build the muscles needed to balance. Eventually, the ninja can hold a handstand for some time, and even walk on his hands.
