How to Put Someone in a Vice Grip

The "anaconda vice" is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu and catch-wrestling hold that can cause severe pain when properly applied. Often referred to as the "vice grip," the move has become more well known as professional wrestlers, like CM Punk, have started using it as a finishing hold. It has also appeared in various grappling and mixed martial arts competitions. Applying the vice grip properly requires careful practice with a training partner.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit down next to the right side of your partner's head with him on his back and your hips next to his neck. Your feet will be pointing forward past the top of his head.

    • 2

Bend your partner's right arm so his fist is against the ground over his shoulder and his elbow pointing up toward the ceiling.

    • 3

Wrap your right arm around the back of your partner's head and grab his right wrist.

    • 4

Bring your left arm over and across the outside of your partner's bent elbow and then grab your own wrist on the inside of his forearm to lock in the vice grip. Extend your arms outward to increase pressure. This creates the vice, by squeezing the head between your two forearms.

Complete the hold by pressing your weight down onto your partner; simultaneously push your hips forward while pulling up and back on your partner's head. The hold, when genuinely applied, is very painful and difficult to escape with the partner's near arm properly trapped if he isn't experienced in grappling.
