How to Put on Dirt Bike Grips

The grips on a dirt bike can be likened to the steering wheel on a car: They are the points at which the rider controls the bike and feels the riding surface back. The grips are also an important safety feature, keeping the rider's hands firmly on the handle bars and shielding them from vibration. Installing new grips will keep you riding safe and comfortable, and can be done quickly and inexpensively.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the old grips and thoroughly clean the handlebar with contact cleaner to remove any grease, dirt and old adhesive.

    • 2

Apply a small bead of grip glue to the inside of the grips and to the edge of the handlebars.

    • 3

Push the grips onto the handlebars firmly, and set them into position as quickly as possible. Allow the grip glue to cure for several hours.

    • 4

Apply a few wraps of safety wire to the ends of each grip. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to twist the ends of the wire together in order to tighten the wraps. Cut off the ends of the twists and tuck any excess wire under the wrap to keep it from catching on your gloves or hands.
