How to Put Rubber Grips on a Bike

It should take all of 30 seconds to remove your old grips and put new rubber grips on a bike. Sometimes, though, the old grips don't want to die and the new ones are not so eager to hit the trail. Fighting with your grips is not worth it. Pull a trick or two out of your bag and your handlebars will be upgraded in no time.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove your old grips. This can be easier said than done. In most cases, simply loosen your shifter assembly, move it out of the way, and carefully slide a flat head screwdriver between the grip and handlebar. Pull the grips off with a twisting motion.

    • 2

Do not scratch your handlebar with the screwdriver. If this does not work right away, don't force it.

    • 3

Squirt water or hair spray under the grip, as suggested by editors at Bicycling Magazine. Slide the grips from side to side until they come off. If this does not work, cut your grips, but be certain not to cut yourself or your handlebar in the process.

Clean your handlebar with water. If there is adhesive from where the old grips were, use rubbing alcohol to remove it.

Use hair spray to install the new rubber grips. Spray on the handlebar and inside your grip. Slide your grip on by twisting back and forth. Alternatively, if you have an air compressor, you can blow air between the handlebar and grip as you install them, according to the experts at Bicycling Magazine.
