How to Remove Handlebar Grips

Maintaining your bike is like fostering a special relationship. The more you nurture it, the more rewarding it is to you. After miles of singletrack mountain biking, your handlebar grips usually are beat. Caked with thick dirt and providing no hand traction, you feel as if your trail control is compromised. A few simple steps will get you back on the dirt, with your bike performing like a Ferrari. But first, you need to get those suckers off.

Instructions

    • 1

Pry off your bar-end caps with the flat head screwdriver.

    • 2

Slide the screwdriver under the edge of the rubber grip to create a space between the grip and the handlebar.

    • 3

Insert the lubricant's canister straw under the grip and squirt the product into the opening.

    • 4

Rotate the grip back and forth, while pulling it towards the end of the handlebar. Keep loosening the grip by performing this twisting and tugging motion.

    • 5

Insert the needle of your compressor between the grip and handlebar. Give a quick blast of air to pop the grip off in its entirety.

    • 6

Repeat the process on the other handlebar grip.

    • 7

Wipe down both handlebars with alcohol and a clean cloth, preparing them for installation of new grips.
