How to Install Jabsco Marine Pumps

Jabsco makes a variety of pumps for onboard marine installations, including pumps for shipboard sewage and disposal systems and bilge pumps. Pumps for use in both applications are similar; the dissimilarity lies in the addition of a macerator head for the sewage and disposal system pump, to comply with the discharge requirements for vessels while in waters to which the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution From Ships -- the MARPOL Treaty -- applies.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap the discharge pipe threads with Teflon tape. Screw the pump onto the discharge pipe.

    • 2

Set the pump in position and mark the position of the mounting holes with a permanent marker, unless there are preexisting mounting holes that meet the requirement for mounting the pump. Remove the pump and drill the mounting holes for the pump, if necessary, with a drill. Dab thread locker on the threads of the pump's mounting bolts.

    • 3

Insert the pump's mounting bolts -- of the size recommended by the manufacturer -- through the rubber grommets provided with the pump. Insert the mounting bolts through the mounting bores. Thread the nuts onto the mounting bolts by hand and tighten with an adjustable wrench.

    • 4

Slide a hose clamp on the discharge hose. Push the discharge hose onto the pump's discharge port nipple.

    • 5

Slide the hose clamp over the nipple. Tighten the screw of the hose clamp with a screwdriver until the hose is securely clamped to the nipple.

    • 6

Snap a separate circuit breaker into the electrical service panel to accommodate the pump. The pump's power lead should be connected to the breaker through a power bus located as far above the normal bilge level as possible, and above the boat's waterline if possible. The pump's grounding lead or grounding strap should connect to the common ground.
