How to Build a Quick Shelter Tarp

A good tarp is one of the quintessential accessories to any outdoor adventure. The proper use of a tarp can keep you dry during a rainstorm or protect your from scorching heat when their is no other shade available. Tarps are very compact and expand to cover a large amount of surface area. Learning how to use your tarp to make a quick shelter may turn an uncomfortable outdoor situation into just another day in the woods.

Things You'll Need

  • Tarp
  • Rope
  • Rocks or some form of weights
  • 2 anchor points, such as trees, tent poles or large rocks

      Tie the rope to your two anchor points. You can tie it parallel to the ground to give maximum interior room, or you can tie it at an angle with one side anchored to the ground. This will decrease interior room, but provide maximum protection from side winds and rain.

      Drape your tarp over the rope with the center of the tarp being supported by the rope.

      Place as many rocks -- or anything that might be used as an anchor weight -- as possible along the two edges of the tarp touching the ground. Use at least four rocks to secure the four corners.
