How to Cut a Skylight in a Cabover Camper

Skylights can instantly bring additional light to the interior of your cab-over camper. Depending on the model you choose and install, they can also assist in venting the camper if the skylight is a model that can be opened. Installing a skylight yourself can usually be done with an afternoon worth of work. By correctly installing your skylight, you avoid leaks problems in the future.

  • Drill and 1/4-inch drill bit
  • Metal file
  • Jig or reciprocating saw

      Draw an outline on the roof of your camper where you want to install the skylight. If the skylight kit includes a template to mark the size of the skylight, place it on the camper. When you are selecting the location for your skylight, be sure to choose a space that runs between the roof support beams which run from side to side of the camper.

      Drill a hole at one corner of the outline for the skylight with a ¼-inch drill bit. Cut the remaining outline using a jig or reciprocating saw. Carefully remove the cut out from camper. With a metal file, remove any jagged or sharp edges from the cut on the camper.

      Place the skylight into the cut out section and secure it into place using the mounting hardware included with the skylight kit. Move inside the camper and install the skylight molding and frame around the skylight.

      Install the flashing on the outside of the skylight. Run a bead of silicone where the skylight flashing meets the roof of the camper. Be thorough and ensure the entire flashing is sealed tightly. If any area is left unsealed water may be able to enter into your camper.

      Remove any excess silicone after it has dried. Inspect the area for any openings or unsealed areas. When you are satisfied the skylight is thoroughly sealed, you are ready to enjoy the camper again.
