How to Wire a Tekonsha Voyager

The Tekonsha Voyager Electronic Brake Control is a fully adjustable device specifically designed for use with electrical trailer brakes. It uses the inertia of the tow vehicle to both determine the timing and strength of current applied to the brake control on the trailer. It features both gross and fine adjustment controls to tune the unit to your vehicle combination.

Instructions

Find a location within easy reach where you can mount the control unit parallel to the direction of travel and within a range of -20 degrees to +70 degrees vertical alignment. Make sure the driver's knee will not strike it in an emergency braking action. Use the drill motor, drills and screwdriver to mount the bracket in your chosen location. Attach the brake control to the bracket with the provided screws, paying close attention to alignment.

Locate the towing accessory outlet under the left side of the dash, if you have a newer vehicle with built-in support for a trailer braking system. Connect the manufacturer-specific plug to the controller. Match the wire colors and connect them with solderless connectors and tape. Then connect the controller to your vehicle's wiring system at the accessory outlet. Purchase the adapter from the dealer or Tekonsha supplier.

Use solderless terminals to connect the controller to wires under your dash, if your vehicle is not equipped with a factory installed brake connector.

Add a terminal and enough primary wire to reach the vehicle battery's negative terminal, and connect the controller's white wire to it. Use the test light and connect the controller's red wire to a wire that produces current only when the brake pedal is pushed. Connect the controller's black wire to a power source that is controlled by the ignition switch. Connect the blue wire to the blue wire on the left side of the driver's compartment. It is usually hidden behind the kick panel. Cover all connections with electrical tape for safety.

Place the vehicle and trailer on the most level surface you can find and connect the trailer wiring. The green light on the control will light, indicating proper connection. If the green light does not illuminate, check your connections and use the troubleshooting guide in the wiring manual.
