How to Repaint a Jayco Trailer

Jayco produces a number of different types of trailers, from camping trailers with a crank-up canvas top to larger, fifth-wheel designs and motor homes. If you have owned your Jayco trailer for a number of seasons, it may be time to repaint the exterior of the trailer to give it a new, fresh look. You could take the trailer to an automotive paint shop, or with some preparation and a weekend's worth of work you can do it yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all external fixtures on the trailer, including any crank-out awnings, lights, propane fuel tanks and spare tires.

    • 2

Apply newspaper over the windows, door handles and light fixtures. Use painter's masking tape to secure the newspaper in place.

    • 3

Wheel your trailer into a garage, or wait for a day of calm weather if you are painting it outdoors.

    • 4

Select the correct paint for the surface of your Jayco trailer. For an aluminum trailer, select an acrylic latex paint that is manufactured specifically for exterior aluminum trailers.

    • 5

Apply a primer coat to the body of the Jayco trailer using a paint sprayer. Allow the primer coat to dry for at least 24 hours before applying the paint. Use a small brush to apply primer in areas that cannot be accurately covered with the sprayer.

Mix the paint as per the guidelines for the type of paint you are using. Pour the paint into the sprayer bottle, attach the bottle to the sprayer and apply the paint in broad, even strokes to the trailer. Begin on one side of the trailer and work around until the entire trailer has been painted. Use a small detail brush to apply paint in areas that cannot be covered accurately with the sprayer. Allow the first coat to dry thoroughly, and apply a second coat.
