How to Set Up Large Canvas Tents

Canvas tents come in many shapes and sizes. The larger the tent, the longer it may take you to assemble it. Canvas tents are ideal for recreational camping and provide shield from the elements, including wind, rain and harsh sunlight. Before you venture out in the wilderness, gather all tent materials and ensure all parts are present and functional. Practice set up at home so you can save time and frustration when setting up at the campground.

      Choose a tent site on flat ground and remove any rocks and sticks. Lay the tent floor flat on the ground and position the door toward the desired location.

      Secure all tent corners by placing a stake through the loops. Push in the stakes with the tips at an angle facing the canvas tent. Secure the stake hooks over the tent loops.

      Assemble the frame. Slide the ridge poles through the sleeves along the center of the tent roof. Slide all other ridge poles through the loops along the roof sides. Install the upright poles and connect them to the ends of the ridge poles. The number of poles depends on the size and shape of your tent.

      Arrange the canvas fabric and lift it completely so that it is fully supported by the frame and corner uprights. Unzip the door and other zippers on your tent to avoid pressure pulling on them, while also allowing air flow. Adjust the height until the tent is taut. Fasten all the lock pins.

      Set up the front awning by connecting all awning ridge poles to the tent body. Secure the awning with the grommets, guy lines and stakes.

      Attach all additional accessories to your canvas tent, such as a side awning, screen enclosures or a rainfly.
