How to Construct a Tipi

Whether following in the footsteps of Native Americans -- or simply creating a special play tent in the backyard -- a tipi is a classic and simple structure. The tipi features a large living space, and protection from the elements. The ventilation flaps allow campers to build a fire indoors without being overwhelmed by smoke.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the canvas into a semi-circle; use scissors. Cut two, V-shaped slits near the top of the semi-circle; these are the smoke flaps.

    • 2

Cut a semi-circle on the 10-foot side of the canvas. Repeat the process on the opposite side. These ends form a door when the canvas is wrapped around the tipi frame.

    • 3

Pinch the fabric of one of the smoke vents together; sew it to form a pocket. Repeat the process for the other smoke flap.

    • 4

Sew a rope along the bottom hem of the canvas. Form loops as you sew, and space the loops equidistant from one another. The loops must be large enough to accommodate tent poles, and hold the poles in place.

    • 5

Tie three of the tipi poles into a tripod. Cross the poles over one another, and tie them securely at the top. Add seven, equally spaced poles to the tripod; the 10 poles resemble a cone. Securely tie the poles at each crossing point.

    • 6

Slide one pole into the smoke flap pocket to create ventilation. Repeat the process with a second pole in the remaining smoke flap.
