How to Aim Sprinklers

Sprinklers are widely used as a way to water lawns or landscapes. Impulse sprinklers are designed to move back and forth to distribute water over a wide area. Aiming a sprinkler is essential so that the water is directed onto areas that need water and away from those that do not, such as driveways and walkways. Impulse sprinklers are designed to be adjustable for proper aiming.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach one end of a garden hose to a water faucet and the other end to an impulse sprinkler.

    • 2

Position the sprinkler in the lawn or landscape with the nozzle aimed in the direction that water should be delivered.

    • 3

Turn on the water to the sprinkler and observe the water pattern and side-to-side travel of the sprinkler head. Turn the water off to aim the sprinkler.

    • 4

Pinch the adjustment ring together on the left side of the sprinkler to adjust the travel distance on the left side. Move the ring toward the front of the sprinkler to aim the water forward; move the ring back to allow the head to travel further to the left and aim the water more to the side. Repeat the adjustment process for the adjustment ring on the right side of the sprinkler.

    • 5

Adjust the dial on top of the nozzle. Turn the knurled dial to increase or decrease the distance that the water will travel. Adjust the distance to aim the water as needed for maximum effect and to avoid waste.
