How to Tie off a Tightened Rope

A half-hitch knot is generally used for light loads, but when doubled up it's the perfect knot to tie off a tightened rope. A double half-hitch is a slip-resistant knot that tightens under load. It's a highly useful knot that can be tied quickly and easily.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap the free end of the rope around a tree trunk, pole or post and pull it tight.

    • 2

Cross the loose, short end of the rope under the tightened, long part of the rope to create a loop.

    • 3

Bring the loose, short end of the rope down and through the loop made between the tightened, long end of the rope and the tree trunk, pole or post.

    • 4

Push the knot toward the tree trunk, pole or post while pulling on the loose, short end of the rope until it's tight.

    • 5

Repeat steps one through four, but instead of tying the knot around a tree trunk, pole or post, tie the knot around the rope right in front of the first half-hitch knot.
