Camping for People Who Hate Bugs & Snakes
-
Bivy Bags
-
Bivy bags, also known as bivy sacks, are one excellent option for protecting you from snakes and bugs while you are out camping. If you have a tent, a bivy bag will be redundant, but a bivy bag is a lightweight way to camp out under the stars and still protect yourself from the bugs and snakes. Make sure to get a bivy bag with a bug netting hood so that you are sealed in.
Bug Spray
-
Using bug spray also will help to keep bugs away from you while out in the wilderness, though it will do little to deter snakes. Mosquitoes and other similar bugs, especially around a campfire at night, can be bothersome and irritating, and bug spray can do a lot to keep them at bay. Also consider bug netting as a less toxic alternative that will also keep the bugs at bay.
Zippers
-
To ensure that you are well protected at night in your tent it is a good idea to use zippers to keep your tent free of anything looking to explore. Most tents have a bug net shield on the door, for instance, which will be ideal for keeping nature out while you sleep, if you want a breeze at night. You should also keep the bug net zipped up during the day, however, to prevent anything from crawling in.
Boots
-
Another good area to look out for bugs and snakes when out camping is your shoes or boots. Shoes and boots are typically left outside of the tent, and are accessible to plenty of bugs and snakes during the night, which might look at a boot or shoe as an ideal place to hunker down. For this reason you should always give your boots and shoes a good shake in the morning to make sure nothing is making a home in there.
