How to Make Camp Friendships

Heading off to summer camp can give children a mixture of excitement and nerves. Some kids become anxious about attending a camp where they do not know anyone. Learning how to make close friends in a short time can be intimidating for a child. Yet campers can open themselves up to new experiences and new friendships with small confidence builders. Gain perspective and make your camp adventure an unforgettable one.

Instructions

    • 1

Introduce yourself to a camper you do not know and ask her a question to get the conversation rolling. Use a phrase like, "Hi. I'm Karen. Where are you from?" Ask where something is located, like the mess hall, or inquire about someone's favorite music group or television show. Find out what craft classes she is signed up for to figure out if you will be seeing her again soon.

    • 2

Bring something you can share with other campers, such as a snack or project. Pack several colors of lanyard string or beads to make friendship bracelets and key chains. Offer pieces of gum or candy to the others in your cabin to break the ice with your bunk mates.

    • 3

Memorize a few jokes before heading to camp to help connect with a new friend or to simply have something to add if others begin telling jokes. Laugh at other people's jokes if they're funny.

    • 4

Invite others to participate in your activities, especially those who look left out. That way you will get to know more campers and make more friends.

    • 5

Be yourself. Avoid trying to impress everyone all the time. Relax and enjoy your time at camp. Let yourself go and participate in silly games and camp traditions. This helps bond you with your cabin mates and make memories.
