How to Pick a Canoe Size

Picking a canoe that is the right size is important for your safety. It also allows for the proper functioning of your canoe. Follow the guidelines below to choose a canoe that isn't too small or large.

Instructions

    • 1

Familiarize yourself with the sizes that canoes come in. Some of the standard size classes for canoes are 10 to 16 feet, 14 to 18 feet and 18 to 36 feet. By knowing the sizes of canoes before you begin shopping, you'll have a better idea of your options and the questions that you should ask while you weigh your options at the store.

Determine how many people will be using the canoe. Small canoes are more appropriate for one or two people, while larger canoes can accommodate larger groups. If you are going on a solo trip, having a canoe that is too large could be inconvenient or possibly even hazardous. Generally, the canoes in the 10 to 16 feet range are suitable for solo canoeing. The 14 to 18 foot canoes are better for 2 people. 18 to 36 foot canoes are suitable for families or groups of 3 or more.

Consider how much weight you will carry in the canoe. Total the weights of all of the people who will use the canoe and the weight of any equipment that you will bring with you. If you're taking a lot of things, don't exceed the weight limit for the canoe. Just because a canoe is designed for 2 people, doesn't mean that it's designed to support the weight of 2 people, camping gear, coolers, water, food and extra clothes.

Consider the types of activities that you are using the canoe for. Small canoes are better for short day trips. You can take a larger canoe on week-long camping trips.

Pick a canoe that matches all of your criteria. Make sure that it has enough room for all of the passengers and their belongings. Note the weight capacity of the boat and never exceed it.
