How to Maintain Stability in a Canoe

Canoes are meant to keep you on the water, not in it. Still, a many canoers have tipped over during excursions. Follow these instructions to avoid this mishap.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep your weight close to the centerline. A lot of people fall out of the canoe when they are climbing in or out of it. By keeping your feet on the center line, you balance of the boat. Putting either foot off to one side of the canoe can tip it.

    • 2

Keep your weight as low as you can. Don't stand tall while you're in the canoe.

    • 3

Distribute your gear evenly throughout the canoe. Make sure no one part of the boat bears too much weight.

    • 4

Row steadily without too much force. Agressive rowing can create many waves in the water around you and waves can disturb the balance of the canoe.

    • 5

Use the right canoe. If you're going to be in calm water, use a canoe with a flat bottom. Use one with a curved bottom if you're going to be in rougher water.
