How to Get out of a Canoe Without Tipping It

Canoeing is a water sport that is done for entertainment, competition and to improve fitness. A canoe is a long, thin boat that is propelled with the use of long paddles. The shape and size of a canoe makes it unstable and prone to tipping. The following guidelines will enable you to maintain your balance and exit the canoe safely, without falling into the water or endangering other passengers.

Instructions

    • 1

Paddle the canoe toward land until it's partially out of the water.

    • 2

Secure the canoe to land by tying it to a dock, putting an anchor in the dirt or having someone who isn't a passenger sit on the end of the canoe to hold it steady.

    • 3

Rotate the canoe sideways so it's lengthwise against the shore.

    • 4

Hold onto the edge of the canoe nearest the shore and stand up very slowly into the crouching position.

    • 5

Move one leg from inside the canoe to the shore. Regain your balance, then move your other leg onto the shore. Slowly stand up and let go of the canoe.
