How to Avoid Tipping a Canoe

1
Pack the canoe properly. Keep the load balanced on the left and ride sides, with a little more weight in the rear of the vessel. The load should be low to the bottom of the canoe. Also, be wary of weight limits as that can make the canoe easier to tip and sink.
-
2
Board the canoe carefully. Let those sitting at the stern and middle board first while the other riders hold the canoe steady. Bending your knees and crouching as you travel to your seat keeps your center of gravity low and distributed across more surface area, making it less like to tip the canoe. Hold the sides of the canoe for balance.

3
Push the canoe into the water softly and smoothly. Once you load the canoe, the bow paddler pushes the boat into the water. Step into the boat and hold both sides of the canoe with your hands, then push the canoe forward with your other leg. While keeping low, lift your leg into the canoe and take a seat.
-
4
Remain seated. Standing forces your weight upon one small area, which can easily cause the canoe to tilt that way, then tip.
-
5
Avoid sudden movements. Move slowly and keep low to avoid jerking the canoe and tipping it.
-
6
Check the weather and water conditions. Strong currents or waves can grip the canoe and flip it. Bad weather, such as strong winds, can also tip over the canoe. If facing a large wave, keep the canoe perpendicular to the wave so that the powerful water doesn't push over the entire side of your canoe and tip you.
