How to Climb Using Knotted Rope

A knotted rope may be a rope of almost any diameter that is suitable for sustaining the weight of the climber. The knots in the rope are typically single or double overhand knots spaced equal distance apart. The purpose is to provide a means of gripping the rope with the hands and a place on which to push with the feet.

Instructions

    • 1

Reach upward to at least head level and grasp the rope at a point just above a knot. Reach high enough to pull yourself upward but not so high as to cause excessive straining.

    • 2

While pulling upward with the arms, step up to a knot and place the foot on top of the knot. Bring the other foot up to the same knot on the opposite side. The feet should be on a knot that is a comfortable distance from the knot being held with the hands but that also allows for the knees to be slightly bent.

    • 3

Using the legs, push upward by straightening the legs and pushing on the knot with the feet. This motion provides momentum allowing the arms and hands to move upward to a knot higher on the rope.

    • 4

Repeat the process of bringing the feet up to a knot that is equal distance from the hands but allows for the legs to be slightly bent.

    • 5

Continue to push with the legs and feet and to reach and pull with the arms and hands to successfully climb the rope.
