How to Tie an Autoblock Knot for Climbing

Rock climbing combines strength and skill for adventurous sport. Knowing how to tie rock climbing knots increases your skill level and keeps you safe during your climb. The autoblock knot is used to brake your descent if you are released, keeping you safe from injuries due to sudden accelerations and stops.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin this rock climbing knot with a section of climbing rope that's about 2 feet long. You want enough rope to wrap around your rappelling rope four or five times, but no more than that or it can get caught.

    • 2

Attach the locking carabiner to the looped end. If you're using a rope with loops at both ends, wrap it around your rappelling rope until you reach the bottom. Then, secure that loop to the locking carabiner. If your rope only has one loop, attach the carabiner to that end.

    • 3

Fold the remaining rope nearly in half. Begin wrapping the doubled up rope around your rappelling rope and secure the loose ends in the wrap. Continue until there is only a small loop remaining at the bottom of the wrap.

    • 4

Secure this remaining loop into the locking carabiner to make an autoblock against sudden rappelling.

    • 5

Hold the autoknot loosely in your braking hand while climbing. If you have an accident and your hand lets go, this rock climbing knot will slow your decent so you don't get hurt.
